This is a short essay—4-6 pages double spaced. Observe all MLA conventions for citations and include a Works Cited section in accordance with the MLA Handbook (6th or 7th edition). The paper should be typed and formatted according to the MLA style, including 1” margins, double spacing, and 12 point font. Your essays should be well articulated and researched with respect to your topic. Grammar and spelling should be error free—part of your grade will take this into account.
Please submit your essay through the York Moodle course site by 5PM on February 13th, 2014. If you are unable to do that, please submit your paper at the end of class on February 13th, 2014.
Suggested Essay Topics
1. Would Bazin or Kracauer see Russian Ark (Alexander Sokurov, 2002) as a film that exploits the essential characteristics of the medium? Address this question by recourse to a close textual analysis of the film.
2. What is the difference between a painting and a film in terms of ontological and epistemological status? Choose one painting and one film to work into your comparison. Use one of the following theorists: Bazin, Kracauer, Rodowick or Manovich.
3. Analyze an internet phenomenon in terms of a new genre that involves collective forms of authorship: remixing etc..
4. What does Classical Film Theory bring to thinking about digital images? Discuss this with reference to any of the following two: Kracauer, Bazin, Eisenstein, Vertov, Cavell.
5 Discuss Science of Sleep (Michel Gondry 2007) through the post-medium theoretical framework proposed by Manovich.
